A Trip to Shimla and the “Quieter Shimla”

Image
Long weekends often urge you to take an outstation trip and by obvious choice you prefer hill stations. Last weekend, we decided to visit Shimla. Though we knew it would be crowded there, we still wanted to go as we had never been to Himachal. Shimla being the most popular hill spot, it was the first to come to our minds. Everything was planned at the last moment. An innova was hired. We started at 5 in the morning from Gurgaon. We were six including me, my husband, my sister, my brother-in-law, their three year old kid, and my other sister. We reached Shimla around 3.15 pm, with just two stoppages in between not taking more than half an hour. So, it actually took around 10 hours. It is Needless to say that we all were tired and immediately needed a comfortable place to stretch out. I forgot to mention that we were super excited and invigorating during our journey but our excitement took a pause when we landed to our destination and got to know that almost all the hotels were bo

Why it pays to be a Woman?

Image
A Woman The first thing I do after switching on my computer in the morning is to give a quick glance to online news and then I go on to check my mails and other personal things. Today, one of the headlines caught my attention and I decided to read the full story. It said, “Just marry girls early to stop rapes: Chautala”. Our honorable former Haryana Chief Minister Om Prakash Chautala is backing Khap panchayat who believe that marriageable age for girls should be lowered to 16 to prevent rapes in the state. Who says that only unmarried girls are raped and not married ones? How could they even come to this illogical solution? This is crime against women and punishment is also given to women only. On one hand, social organizations, NGOs and government are working for women’s social and economic development. They are trying to empower women with education so that they could become better informed about each aspect of life. They can become self-independent and can exercise their

How to Avoid Few Common Health Woes

Image
Recently, my mom has been diagnosed with cervical spondylitis. This is a disorder in the neck region and backbone. It is caused by long term (chronic) degeneration (wear-and-tear) of the cervical spine.  She is having such worse pain that she is not able to sleep. With high power sleeping pills only, she can sleep for few hours. My dad consulted 3-4 doctors and all of them have suggested regular physiotherapy. She also has been advised for few exercises. Medication doesn’t help much in this case. What happened in my mom’s case that she ignored her pain initially. According to doctors, she had this problem for the past 5 years but she didn’t care for little pain and continued her daily routine work. When it became sever and intolerable now, then only she talked about it. This is not only my mom’s case but many Indian ladies who keep ignoring their little problems and later on these small things become a bigger issue. Your health is wealth. We just can’t play with it. In India, we take

The Autumn has Arrived…………..

October, November and December have always remained my favorite months. The slow change in weather from summer to winter is beautiful. Despite being little hot in the daytime, you could experience cool breeze while traveling.   All our awaited festivals are lined up now starting from Navratri to Christmas. Though some poets have associated autumn with melancholy but I believe this is the time of happiness and togetherness. Those who have gone to faraway places for work; they visit their families and celebrate festivals together. I find this is the best time to travel, especially for long train journeys.  There is a famous Poem on autumn by John Keats: Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness,    Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun; Conspiring with him how to load and bless    With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eves run; To bend with apples the moss’d cottage-trees,    And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;       To swell the gourd, and plump the

Ecstasy of Nature in the Monsoons – Lonavala

Image
I had been hearing from my friends about the scenic beauty of Lonavala that comes alive in the monsoons and finally the last weekend, we (me, my husband and two other friends) decided to visit Lonavala.   We kept it short to one day only. As we wanted to reach early with no traffic, we started at 5.30 in the morning. It is around 96 km away from Mumbai and is accessible through the expressway.   The greenery, the scenic view and cool rain showers made our entire drive very pleasant. Soon I realized why Mumbaikars call Lonavala “a must visit” place in Monsoons. The travelling itself seemed a destination. We reached there around 8 am and our first stop was at Bushy Dam. I just can’t get enough words to describe the feel that I got as I stepped out of the car. It was a breathtaking view. It appeared as if the entire place was wrapped up in the velvety green blanket. This dam is a much sought after picnic destination in Lonavala. Visitors flock in with their families and friends

Go Floral This Summer………..

Why to hate sun for peeking at us more and more? Welcome it by being   sunnier and bright. I am loving this season wearing its lovely shades.  Give yourself a floral flavored treat this summer and trust me, you will love it more.   Try donning on your favorite colored floral dress. If you were longing to wear your flowers but were afraid of being vintage-fashioned, this has come the perfect time to wear them. Don’t go overboard with more styling, just opt for bright colors and floral patterns that suit your complexion and body type. You can accessorize you simple look by going for some lovely floral motif hair bands or pretty butterfly clips. You will have that summery feel by wearing big sunglasses and colored chappals. Ditch your signature earthy-colored leather purse this summer. Go fashionable with beautiful floral patterned purses and handbags. Not only they will keep you in sunny mood, but will invite a lot of eye glances.
